Mess Up - Fess Up!

by Wayne Cordeiro on September 28, 2023

Good morning! It is Thursday, September 28, 2023. Have you ever noticed that there are times in the Bible when Jesus minces no words? Who does He do that with? The widow? The humble? The hurting? No, it's usually with those who pretend to be more than they really are, and that condition usually shows up when they are being reproved or corrected. I can be that person. Today, the Bible is a mirror. It may be for you, too. Read on...

Today's Reading:

Zechariah 1,2,3; Luke 11

Scripture

One of the experts in the law answered him, “Teacher, when you say these things, you insult us also.” Jesus replied, “And you experts in the law, woe to you, because you load people down with burdens they can hardly carry, and you yourselves will not lift one finger to help them.” (Luke 11:45-46)

Observation

Jesus minced no words when it came to the Pharisees and teachers who were feigning spirituality when they were, in fact, carnal and manipulative. He rebuked the Pharisees for parading their authority. They didn’t walk their talk, and when a teacher of the Law sided with the Pharisees. When he tried demeaning Jesus by whining about how offended he was, the Lord turned to him and rebuffed him as well! Jesus was an equal-opportunity offender.

Application

People today, especially in our 'politically correct' society, tend to prioritize personal feelings over the truth. If my emotions are hurt or if my feelings are offended, then YOU are wrong (regardless of whether or not I am guilty). The truth becomes secondary to my moods and personal happiness. However, Jesus doesn't indulge this immaturity. He defined reality as it was and dealt straightforwardly with those who called themselves 'leaders.'

I've noticed that Jesus is always merciful and full of grace with people who fail. However, with those who are cunning and crafty, He was direct. Psalm 18:6 puts it well: 'With the pure, You show Yourself pure, but with the crooked, You show Yourself astute.'

Therefore, I must keep my heart pure by cleansing it often if I desire His mercy and grace. I am far from perfect, so I must remain humble because I need to be constantly perfected by the Spirit of God.

Prayer

Father, thank You for Your grace and mercy for me, a sinner. I mess up often, but I never want to excuse myself or try to turn the tables on You and whine that my feelings got hurt. Forgive me for my immaturity and attempts to play the victim role. Please help me to keep my hand to the plow, and when I mess up … to fess up!
