Scripture
“Now it came about that the sons of Israel cried unto the Lord on account of Midian — and the Lord said, ‘You have not obeyed Me.’” (Judges 6:7, 10).
Observation
Israel had imposed suffering on themselves. It wasn’t the work of the devil that was the problem. It was the drift of the righteous! We saw that judgment came in Lot’s day … when God could not find even a few righteous in Sodom. We saw that in Jesus’ day …. it wasn’t the non-Christians that put Jesus on the cross. It was the religious leaders.
Application
I wonder if much of the course of history rises and falls on the people of the Kingdom and not on the people of the world. The people of the world don’t pose any threat to the prince of darkness. The fall of morals in America didn’t begin with a sudden rise in immorality; that has been with us since the beginning. Instead, it is due to the compromise of the Church.
A French historian was studying the reason behind America’s greatness. The answer was found in the churches of America … people aflame with righteousness. And when America began to decline, he later wrote: “Have we fallen from goodness? No, not the non-Christian. The Church! The compromise. The endorsement of sin!”
Watch for Midianites.
These are the things that steal our fruitfulness! Recognizing our compromise and endorsement of sin will denote the beginning of our slide. And the sooner we address it, the better.
Prayer
Lord, I want to repent on behalf of America. May the return begin with me, not in the White House but in my house; not with sinners, but with the saints. Work on us so we will be wise and courageous as we remain pillars and supports of Your truth.
