The Second Crow

by Wayne Cordeiro on March 07, 2024

Happy Thursday! It is March 7, 2024. God used a rooster to warn Peter with its first crow. When the second sounded, it was no longer a warning. It was a judgment. God still uses roosters in our lives today. It may come in varying forms, but this question remains: will I make the adjustments and changes necessary after the first crow … or wait for the second? Read on …

Today's Reading:

Deuteronomy 5,6; Psalms 43; Mark 14

Scripture

"Immediately, the rooster crowed the second time.  Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows twice, you will disown me three times.” And he broke down and wept." (Mark 14:72)

Observation

Jesus had forewarned Peter that he would have the opportunity to deny Him; indeed, it came to pass in the courtyard! Peter had his chance to recognize this pivotal moment in verse 68 when a rooster's crow signaled what was unfolding.

"… seeing Peter warming himself, the servant girl looked at him and said, 'You were also with the Nazarene, Jesus.' But he denied it, saying, I neither know nor understand what you mean." And he went out into the gateway, and a rooster crowed…"

Application

The first crow was an urgent reminder that things are going south! Why did he wait for the second crow … the crow of judgment? That signals the removal of His grace and the beginning of consequences. I have heard and will continue to hear many first crows; at the first crow, I need to move! The first crow may mean:

  • Distancing myself from a relationship that is only going to end badly.
  • Rescinding a decision or purchase I am about to make that will only bring regret.
  • Abandoning an action or words I was planning that would only hurt my calling and family

Prayer

Dear Father, help me to hear the first crows You send into my life. However they arrive, whatever shape they take, I incline my ear to hear and my heart to move! Help me to adjust my life to Your Word when You first speak. However, should I ever forget, awaken my heart and rouse my soul to recognize Your warnings. I want to hear and obey the first crow so I never have to hear … the second!
