Inner Man

Scripture

“I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being …” (Ephesians 3:16)

Observation

There's a greater source of strength that I must learn to tap into. Sometimes, I find myself physically tired and emotionally drained, but I have another source of strength at my disposal… the "inner man!"  

Physical strength will require exercise and strength conditioning.   Emotional strength will require training my mind to think and see correctly.  Inner Man … this strengthens my spirit, faith, resolve, and tenacious determination to follow Jesus regardless of the circumstances.  

  • Romans 7:22 uses the same word: "For "in my inner being," I delight in God's law …". 
  • 2 Corinthians 4:16:  "Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day."

1 Peter alludes to this in the lives of women: "Let your adornment not be external only, but let it be the hidden person of the heart, with an imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is so precious in the sight of God."

Application

I am recognizing that there’s another source of strength—my inner man. I cannot allow it to get flustered. I must strengthen it so that it is not baited by the lures or disappointments of the world. I need to cultivate this area, otherwise, I will lose a third of my strength that God provides by His Spirit!

When I think I’m exhausted because I am physically and emotionally depleted, a storehouse of strength remains in my “inner man.” This is where there just may be an unending supply!

Solitude, prayer, and consistently feeding on the Word of God are ways to cultivate and strengthen my inner man.

Prayer

Father, please help me to strengthen my “inner man” so that when I am physically and emotionally drained, I will still have much left to keep me stable and strong!
