Cheese Deliverer to the King

by Wayne Cordeiro on April 15, 2024

It's a glorious Monday! It is April 15th, 2024. Today, let's step into one of the most famous battles of the Bible: David and Goliath! That battle didn't last long. One sling and a smooth stone, and it was over! But what caused the upsurge in David's courage? What did God use to transform David from a cheese deliverer to a King? Read on …

Today's Reading:

1 Samuel 17; Psalm 9; Matthew 2

Scripture

"David said to the Philistine, “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.” (1 Samuel 17:45)

Observation

David was sent to the frontlines with these instructions: “Take … these ten loaves of bread for your brothers and hurry to their camp. Take along these ten cuts of cheese to the commander of their unit. See how your brothers are and bring back some assurance…” (v17-18). David’s job was to deliver bread and cheese; nothing fancy, but far more important than you’d ever think. In doing so, along the way, he would find his purpose, calling, and crown!

Application

I wonder how many times we begrudge the menial? We sidestep them and find rational alibis so we don't need to follow through. Not David; he saw the same things as others, but he saw them differently. He never begrudged menial tasks like delivering cheese and bread. It was along his route that David stepped into his mantle and calling.

Here is another characteristic of David. When he heard the taunting of Goliath against the armies of the Lord Almighty, his courage grew. Why? He didn't see the army as they were—scared chickens (even though they were trembling with fear, hiding in thickets and caves - see 13:6-8). Instead, he spoke of them as the "armies of the living God!"

  • He saw things up - rather than down.
  • He saw the men as the "Army of the Living God," not chicken-hearted pansies.
  • He saw potential when others only saw problems.

Prayer

Lord, please grant me the eyes of David... to look BEYOND the problems until I see the potential. If I stop at problems, I won’t get very far. They are everywhere! But if I look beyond them, I can see the possibilities. I can see You!
