Good morning and Merry Christmas. Today is Tuesday, December 16th, 2025. Christmas can sure sneak up on you unexpectedly—kind of like baby Jesus showing up in the most unassuming way to bring salvation to the world. In a similar way, the apostle Peter encourages the dispersed, born-again Christians in Asia Minor to be like newborn babies in order to grow spiritually. Let’s check it out.
Today's Reading:
1 Peter 1,2,3,4,5
Scripture
“Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind. Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.” (1 Peter 2:1–3)
Observation
Newborn babies are dependent on their parents for everything. They crave milk for sustenance—this is how they grow. In the same way, we grow spiritually by craving the Word of God with an infant-like desire. This is why Jesus says that those who are childlike will receive the Kingdom of God. There is no complex reasoning or rebellion, only full reliance on the Father. That kind of faith requires dependence, humility, and obedience. To grow spiritually, we must return to a heart that is fully dependent on God and His Word. This takes faith, because we constantly fight against the tension of growing up and insisting on doing things “my way.”
Application
Take a moment to honestly examine what you are craving. Are you feeding your soul with God’s Word, or have other voices and comforts taken its place? God could have come in the form of a warrior, philosopher, politician, or king. Instead, He came as a baby to example how we ought to come to Him. This Christmas, let’s be intentional to return to a simple devotion to God’s Word. Growing up, my father always told me, “Spiritual growth doesn’t come in a day, but daily in His Word.”
Prayer
Thank You for sending Your Son humbly and unassumingly. It teaches us to return to a childlike faith, not a childish faith. Remove conceit and self-reliance from our hearts, and give us a deep craving for Your Word. This Christmas, may we depend on You alone. Amen.
