Today's Reading:
Song 5,6,7,8; Philippians 1
I've added an extra section after my daily devotions. I call it "Personally Speaking" (or "PS" for short) where I share my personal thoughts on what's happening in the world and the Church.
Scripture
“… and that most of the brethren, trusting in the Lord because of my imprisonment, have far more courage to speak the word of God without fear.” (Philippians 1:14)
Observation
Paul’s demeanor, his strength, and his steadfastness under fire were what gave “far more courage” to other believers. It is how leaders fare under fire that determines, to a large degree, the courage level of those under his or her care. (As an example, if you don’t trust yourself to sit in a chair, you’ll never convince others to do so).
In churches, if the courage of the congregation is waning, or if their willingness to share the Word with family and friends is low, then we have only to look at ourselves. The church will self reproduce itself following our example of who we are and how we lead.
Application
I must ask myself these questions as I assess my leadership:
- How courageous am I as a leader when it comes to living out the Word under pressure? Under hardship, how well do I shine His light?
- How well do I fare when confrontation is needed?
- When there is a disturbance in church, how graciously yet courageously do I handle the situation to bring restoration to the body of Christ?
People will take their cue off of leaders they want to emulate. If the leaders are courageously leading, the people will be as well. If the leaders are joyful and free in Christ, so will the church be. If the leaders’ work ethic and servants’ spirits are authentic, so will the people’s be.
Everything about the church God has given me to lead must start with me, but not as a performance. “Courage” wasn’t listed as part of my job description. It must be part of my default system. My first inclination must be to be brave. It must be an authentic proclivity to be courageous under fire. Joshua 1:9 reminded me today: “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”
Prayer
Father, thank You for Your wisdom and insight. Help me to lead Your people wisely! Help me to steward well what You’ve given me, and in times of trouble, I will put my trust in You. I know I will be tested, so I commit now to trust You and be confident in You.

Dare To Be A Darius
We live in a world filled with injustice, oppression, corruption, disaster, disease, and various other kinds of trouble. Many of us have experienced loss, tragedy, and suffering because of the condition of our fallen world. As I’ve traveled around the global church, I’ve found that all this trouble has gotten Christians everywhere discouraged.
Living Out Of The Sweet Spots Of Life
Wouldn’t it to be nice to check your life and see whether you’re hitting the sweet spot? Here are three great ways to check and see if we’re hitting off of the sweet spots of our lives.
