Resting in Storms

by Wayne Cordeiro on July 07, 2025

Good morning, Monday! It’s July 7, 2025. Last week, I experienced what was by far the worst horse accident in my 11 years of riding. My arm was literally split open from elbow to wrist—not exactly the kind of “trail ride” I had in mind. Three nights in the hospital. Two surgeries. More antibiotics than I’d care to remember.

But God tucked a treasure into the middle of all that pain. What was it? Read on…

Today's Reading:
Hosea 10,11,12; Psalms 73; Hebrews 4

Scripture

“Therefore, since the promise of entering His rest still stands, let us be careful that none of you be found to have fallen short of it.” (Hebrews 4:1)

Observation

When I landed in the emergency room, everything went into fast-forward—people rushing, machines beeping—and within minutes, they were wheeling me toward the O.R. In that hallway, somewhere between anxiety and anesthesia, I had a choice: to panic—or to rest.

And when I say “rest,” I don’t mean sleeping. It’s not giving up.

It’s total, unequivocal… trusting.

It’s the kind of rest that anchors the soul in God’s sovereignty when everything else is spinning. The kind of rest Hebrews talks about—a rest that doesn’t remove the storm, but invites peace into the storm.

Application

Life will hand you moments like that—maybe not in an O.R., but in a courtroom, a boardroom, a waiting room. Moments that yank the steering wheel out of your hands. That’s when Hebrews whispers: “Don’t miss this. There’s a rest available. Don’t fall short.”

It’s not a passive escape. It’s an intentional surrender.

I’m reminded of this little gem from an anonymous poet:

In every challenge, strength bestows—

Through pain, a deeper love we know.

Every wound, every scar,

Reminds of battles far.

And in the end, returns us home.

Prayer

Lord, thank You. You never promised a trial-free life, but You did promise Your presence in the midst of it. Teach me to enter Your rest—not as an escape, but as a surrender. Steady my heart in the chaos. Take the wheel, and lead me back home to You.
