No Such Thing as Safe Sin

by Aaron Cordeiro on April 29, 2025

Good morning—today is April 29, 2025. I read an article some time ago titled “No Such Thing as Safe Poison.” It was in a wildlife magazine about the preservation of endangered species and how certain anticoagulant rat poisons are killing off natural predators of rodents, which in turn increases the rat population. Sin is the same—it leads to death. The Psalmist constantly scrubs his heart to stay on the path of life… read on to see how.

Today's Reading:
2 Samuel 4,5; Psalm 139; Matthew 16

Scripture

“Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.  See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”  (Psalm 139:23-24)

Observation

Psalm 139 highlights the all-knowing and all-powerful nature of God, and David is keen on keeping a healthy relationship with God.  Aware of the toxicity of unresolved sin, David gives us a glimpse into his prayer life—pulling back the curtain to reveal a heart open to God’s scrutiny. At the core of his prayer is a humble invitation for the Lord to come in and do a deep clean of his heart and ways.

The wages of sin is death, and sin is anything that separates us from God. Whether massive, medium, mini, or unknown—there is no such thing as safe sin.

Application

Today, let’s ask God to search our hearts with honesty and courage. It’s easy to categorize sin as “big” or “small,” but David reminds us that anything offensive to God is worth examining and removing. Like poison, even a small dose of sin can contaminate our spiritual health, dull our conscience, and weaken our witness. I will take time today to reflect on areas I may have justified, overlooked, or hidden—habits, attitudes, or thoughts I’ve allowed to remain because they seemed harmless. Then, like David, I will invite God to reveal and remove what doesn’t belong. Avoiding “small” sin is just as critical as resisting obvious temptation—because all sin is unsafe.

Prayer

Dear Lord, Today I echo the heart of David: “Search my heart and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in Your everlasting way.” I don’t want to hold onto anything that separates me from Your presence or keeps me from walking in Your everlasting way. Amen.
