Happy Thursday! It is December 5, 2024. Who’s your counselor? Each of us needs a friend, a counselor, or an adviser to whom we’ve given entrée into our heart. As the old adage states: “The eye cannot see itself.” There are times when we need a trusted counselor to help us understand why we aren’t seeing things clearly. David had several counselors, but Hushai was the one he trusted as a friend. However, there was someone else he trusted even more. Do you know who that was? Read on…
Today's Reading:
Ephesians 5,6; Psalms 119:1-80
Scripture
“Your statutes are my delight; they are my counselors.” (Psalm 119:24)
Observation
David had Ahithophel as a counselor, but Ahithophel turned against him during Absalom’s rebellion. In contrast, Hushai remained faithful.
Each of us needs a “Hushai” in our lives—someone we’ve entrusted with permission to speak into our hearts and advise us when we can’t see clearly. However, David’s primary and daily counselor wasn’t a person at all.
It was the Word of God! The statutes and commands of God directed his heart. David didn’t wait for others to provide him with direction or correction; his consistent connection with the Scriptures became his ultimate source of wisdom.
Wisdom doesn’t come all at once, but it does come—daily!
Application
I am deeply thankful for the counselors in our lives, but our greatest and primary counselor must be the Holy Spirit speaking through the Word of God. My obedience is tested by my willingness to follow the Word with a genuine heart of integrity—not for the sake of others first, but for myself.
There can be no pretense of being able to hear God when others cannot. No “spiritual one-upmanship.” David demonstrated humility and honesty that inspired confidence in his leadership and trust in his decisions.
Prayer
Father, thank You for Your Word that continually guides me and examines the condition of my heart. I know I am far from perfect, but what gives me hope is how Your Word keeps correcting me, nudging me, and reactivating my conscience. It keeps me balanced, level-headed, and grounded in You!
