We, as Americans, seem to be consumed with consuming! That must be why they call us “consumers.” But, it really is not a flattering term when you think about it! Webster defines “consume” as; to gulp, devour, spend and chomp! But in today’s lesson, God offers us a far better clothing trend, a fashion that was not designed in Italy …. It was designed in heaven! Read on…
Today's Reading:
Romans 13,14,15,16
Scripture
“Let us therefore lay aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light.” (Romans 13:12)
Observation
Paul exhorts his readers to walk and behave as if in the light, where everyone knows what is going on. If we walk in darkness, our flesh is prompted to respond to temptation and rationalize.
However, whether sin is done in the light or darkness, the wages are the same — death. But what Paul is teaching here is that in the darkness, our flesh seems to be more susceptible. We are prone to the deceptive feeling that we are exempt from consequences if “no one sees.” However, the consequences will be a wage of sin — whether or not people see.
But here’s the other lesson to me. The Scripture says that I must put on the “armor of light.” Walking in the light is a protector, an armor, and a strength against what our enemy would want to do. It guards me, my heart, and my life against the darts and spear-thrusts of the adversary.
Application
Light is an armor — darkness is not. Yet, so often, we think it’s the other way around. We think we can hide in the dark, protected by darkness, exempt from the devil’s attacks. Oh, how clever the devil is, but we must let the Word give us wisdom and clarity on truth, lest we substitute a lie for the truth. Darkness does not protect — it makes us ever so vulnerable to the enemy!
Light is an armor! Light is what God clothed Himself in. Light is how the Scriptures identify God’s nature. He calls us to be the lights of the world. Light is an armor. It’s also our inheritance.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, may I walk in the light (1 John 1:7). Help me never to be afraid of the light. We understand when children are afraid of the darkness — but how often we, as adults, are more afraid of the light! Teach me Your ways as I open my life to Your scrutiny and Your protection. Then, I can fully expect Your protection when I walk in the light!
