Good morning, friends. It is Thursday, December 18, 2025. Can you believe we are just one week away from Christmas? In our world today, Christmas has quietly shifted from celebrating the arrival of the Messiah to centering on ourselves. As Christmas draws near, we need the reminder that this season is more about Him than us. John the Baptist gives us that reminder when Jesus’ ministry begins to surpass his own.
Today's Reading:
John 2,3,4
Scripture
“You yourselves can testify that I said, ‘I am not the Messiah but am sent ahead of Him.’ The bride belongs to the bridegroom. The friend who attends the bridegroom waits and listens for Him, and is full of joy when he hears the bridegroom’s voice. That joy is mine, and it is now complete. He must become greater; I must become less.”
(John 3:28–30)
Observation
John’s purpose in life was to prepare the way for Jesus. He compares himself to the friend of the bridegroom—much like a best man—whose role is not to draw attention to himself, but to do everything possible to honor the groom and celebrate the bride.
When John says, “I am not the Messiah,” he is acknowledging that he does not have the power to save anyone—only to point people to the One who can. This can be a struggle for anyone placed in authority or influence. Authority often feels like a promotion to greatness; yet in the Kingdom of God, it is a promotion to the servant’s quarters.
John’s joy was not found in being seen, but in knowing Jesus was being promoted.
Application
John’s disciples noticed that Jesus’ ministry outpaced John’s, and he said, “He must become greater; I must become less.” This takes not just humility, but a pre-understanding that Jesus is the main thing.
This Christmas, where might you be competing with Jesus for attention—your time, your expectations, or your control? What would it look like for Jesus to become greater in your schedule, your heart, and your home?
Prayer
Lord, help me step out of the limelight and make room for You. Strip away my need to be seen, admired, or in control. Let my joy be complete as You become greater in my life—especially this Christmas. Amen.
