Finding the Rhythms

by Wayne Cordeiro on June 06, 2022

Good morning. It is Monday, June 6th, 2022. Time can fly by so quickly that we no longer enjoy each day. Our life becomes fast and furious, but today, Solomon encourages us to slow down … not because there is a speed limit, but because there is so much to enjoy! The bad news is that time flies. The good news is that you’re the pilot. Read on…

Today's Reading:

Ecclesiastes 1,2,3; Psalms 45; Ephesians 2

Scripture

“I know that there is nothing better for people than to be happy and to do good while they live.  That each of them may eat and drink, and find satisfaction in all their toil; this is the gift of God.”  - Ecclesiastes 3:12-13

Observation

Some of Solomon’s writing seems a bit cynical, but one theme seems to surface over and over again …. “We must take the time to rejoice in each day!”  Each breath and activity is worthy of our notice, for each of them comes from our Creator. Sometimes, we can become too single-minded and so ultra-focused that while tackling our to-do lists, we miss living the way God intended us to live. We become efficient but not effective. Being efficient is doing things right,  but being effective is DOING THE RIGHT THINGS. We can get so focused on building a business that we miss watching our kids grow, or while hurrying to keep schedules, we sacrifice a meaningful life for more meetings.

Application

It’s important to take the time to enjoy life, but that can only be accomplished if done intentionally. For example, instead of just typing out this devotion to order to feel a sense of accomplishment, I will instead enjoy the flow of inspired ideas, the adjectives that bring life to words, and the rhythm of sentences that orchestrate God’s truths. Even my coffee tastes better when I take the time to notice the robust, savory flavors in the roast. Life is splendid when I take the time to enjoy the moment.

An old rabbinic saying states: “One day God will hold us each accountable for all the things He created for us to enjoy … but we refused to do so.” I sure don’t want to be guilty for missing the moment.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, I want to be purposeful and peaceful … the kind of peace that starts on the inside. Help me to ban any undue hurry from my life and point me to the wonder of Your world. In this way, I will be able to hear Your voice more clearly and sense Your heart more accurately. I’m not in any race. Instead, I am in a relationship with You and those I love. Please remind me to invest in those two things more and more each day. I need your help because I can be a driven person and miss all the beauty I am driving right by.
