A Diluted Faith

by Wayne Cordeiro on December 14, 2021

Instead of canceling culture, we need to master culture and learn from it, lest we repeat it. Today, one of the most dangerous myths is the Cancel Culture and Critical Race Theory (which is racism at its very worst, assigning behavior to people based on their color.) I am baffled that we are not wiser than that in our educational systems. Therefore, we must turn that tide as Christians and live biblically, learning from our past. Jude tells it like it is. Read on …

Today's Reading:
Hebrews 12,13; Jude

Scripture

“Woe to them! They have taken the way of Cain; they have rushed for profit into Balaam's error; they have been destroyed in Korah's rebellion.” (Jude 1:11)

Observation

Jude was an amazing bible historian. In one sentence, he alludes to Cain, Balaam, and the Korah rebellion mentioned in Numbers 16. But here, he speaks not about the past, but the present — not about the Old Testament, but the New. Not about “them,” but about “us!”

Application

Jude sees our faith being diluted and scripts an epistle to address the slippage. He starts to write about one subject but is prompted to a greater need. “Although I was eager to write to you about our common salvation, I found it necessary to write appealing to you to contend for the faith … for certain people have crept in unnoticed …”. Then, he proceeds to address a vital need that the churches are facing — the distraction and dilution of our faith by those who claim Christ yet engage in activities that deny what they espouse.

  • Cain: Being jealous of his brother, he usurped his position and killed him. Families turning against each other for unnecessary reasons.
  • Korah: These leaders rebelled against Moses, whose brother and nephews were also in leadership positions. The sons of Korah felt it was nepotism and campaigned against him. They wanted “equality,” but their definition of equality was motivated by greed and jealousy. God intervened and struck down 250.
  • Balaam: A “prophet for hire” that sold out for money. Balaam is not a rare example. His is a present reality, one who made ministry into a career path — where ministry became his business. If we don’t see Balaam’s error, we will end up seeing Balaam’s donkey, and we together may be facing a flaming sword.

These examples are being repeated today because we know not the Word of God. We have set it aside. The importance of the Word was emphasized by Moses just before the Israelites entered the Promised Land. He refers to knowing and applying the Word of God. He said: “They are not just idle words for you—they are your life. By them you will live long in the land you are crossing the Jordan to possess.” (Deut. 32:47)

Prayer

Dear Father, thank You for continually helping me keep my heart clear for the Gospel. I exist for You and not the other way around.
