Why Wait for the Funeral?

by Wayne Cordeiro on January 23, 2025

Happy Thursday! It is January 23, 2025. Plagues! God sent plagues not to confound but to convince, not to pester but to persuade. Does He still do the same today? I wonder if He increases the plagues even more for those whose hearts are bent on disbelief. Read on…

Today's Reading:

Exodus 6,7,8; Luke 23

Scripture

“… When Aaron stretched out his hand - gnats came on people and animals… But when the magicians tried to produce gnats by their secret arts, they could not…  the magicians said to Pharaoh, “This is the finger of God.” But Pharaoh’s heart was hard, and he would not listen” (Exodus 8:17-19).

Observation

I think the theme song of hell will be, “I Did It My Way!”

Their attempts to mimic God came to an end. They wanted to do things their way. However, there came a time when Pharaoh’s magicians could no longer duplicate what God was doing. Counterfeits failed. Forgeries were no longer convincing. The people recognized the hand of God, but they still would not be convinced—until all their firstborn sons lay dead.

Application

Why wait until the funerals to finally obey? Why didn’t they recognize the hand of God early on, when everything was in disarray? Instead, they tried to contain chaos by their own methods.

“We’ve got science. We have technology. We have AI. We have innovation and riches. Who needs God?”

But what will you do when it all fails? Because it will.

Prayer

Father, I surely don’t want to be counted among those who require more plagues to convince me. Teach my heart to say “yes” at Your first command rather than waiting for the funerals to finally give in.
