Scripture
“Now these are the heads of the mighty men whom David had, who gave him strong support in his kingdom, together with all Israel, to make him king, according to the word of the Lord concerning Israel.” (1 Chronicles 11:10)
Observation
David’s Thirty Mighty Men: they were like the “Magnificent 7,” a “Band of Brothers,” and maybe for the older crowd, the “Expendables” with Sylvester Stallone. In either case, David was who he was, in part, due to those he brought around him. These were capable warriors, men of renown, proven and brave. But these men didn’t come as a “Plug-‘n-play” package. Instead, they were built from those who were “distressed, in debt, or discontented” (1 Sam. 22:2). But for some nation-changing reason, God chose these to make up the A-team that would launch Israel into a Golden Era.
Application
I, too, must look for the same kind of potential that was in these mighty men. David was able to spot their latent possibilities and invest in them. I’m sure not all of them panned out. From the 400 that initially gathered, 30 rose to the top tier. Most of the others, I’m sure, became fabulous warriors, but only 7.5% became top-tier leaders. Looking at it this way, our percentage of great leaders over the past few decades has been very high! How thankful I am for our team and the great people God is bringing to the ministry!
Prayer
Dear Father, David modeled the importance of team building and creating capable leaders. I must follow his example. Thank you for our great church and college. I am amazed at those You are calling to create another group of God’s mighty men and women who will usher in a new golden era for the years ahead.
