Love Defined

by Wayne Cordeiro on February 28, 2025

Good morning! Today is Friday, the last day of February—February 28th, 2025. We’ve been in Mark, but somehow, 1 Corinthians 13 slipped into the mix. So … let’s talk about who we are when no one is looking. This is where character lives. Let’s take a quiz to see how we’re doing. Read on …

Today's Reading:
Numbers 24,25,26,27; 1 Corinthians 13

Scripture

“Love is patient, love is kind, and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant, does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered …” (1 Corinthians 13:4-5)

Observation

All these qualities spell character—godly character—and the sum of these attributes brings forth a love that never fails. Our greatest value does not lie in our abilities or skills. We may hold great authority, but that alone does not define who we are. After all, we could be demoted tomorrow!

Instead, God tells us that our identity is evidenced by solid, consistent character. That is where we will be measured. It’s who we are when no one is looking. It’s who we are when there’s no one around to impress.

Application

Love is made up of godly character, and it can be developed. However, this course takes a lifetime to complete.

Here’s your mid-term exam: Begin by placing your name before each quality to see how you measure up. Read the following as if someone were describing you in your absence.

  • Would they say you are patient, kind, never jealous, never bragging, and never arrogant? Would they say that you never act unbecomingly and are never biased?Would they say that you are:
  • Would they say that you are never easily provoked to anger and never hold a grudge?

How would you grade yourself?

Our greatest battles must be won on the battlefields of our own hearts. When we win there, these victories release a fragrance that defines who we truly are.

Prayer

God, I pray that You would reveal the areas in my life where I lack love. I have a long way to go! Help me grow in a love that is genuine and without pretense—a love that reflects Your heart rather than my own. For that is the only kind of love that never fails.
