Proven by Wisdom

by Wayne Cordeiro on May 26, 2023

Good morning. It’s Friday, May 26, 2023. We are celebrating my wife Anna’s birthday this weekend! She said she’s turning 39. The best way to stay young is to fake your age; that’s one of the best lessons I’ve learned in my 52 years of life. Anyway, read on...

Today's Reading:
Proverbs 1,2,3; Romans 7

Scripture

“Blessed are those who find wisdom, those who gain understanding.” (Proverbs 3:13)

Observation

We can gain knowledge from books, and understanding comes from comprehending the principles behind that knowledge. However, wisdom is revealed through the application of that knowledge and is evidenced by the fruit or proof in a person's life.

"You will know them by their fruit." - Mt. 7:16

"So that the proof of your faith, which is more precious than gold..." - 1 Pt. 1:7

There are Christians who possess knowledge but may not necessarily be wise. The knowledge they gained has yet to go deep enough to seep out of their toes. While they may have a strong grasp of Scripture, the question remains: Does their personal life bear good fruit? Has there been a long obedience in the same direction … or is their faithfulness more like a season of temporary penance for a poor past? This will usually fade. (A good leader exercises patience to observe their eventual default.)

Look at their finances, family, and marriage … are they fruitful? The proof lies in the fruit of their life, not merely in statements about their life. This is where one can discern whether they are applying what they know from God's Word or if they expect others to apply it.

  • Their marriage and family health.
  • Is there balanced financial stewardship and a semblance of order?
  • Could a stranger discern that they are Christians by the way they live?

Application

When choosing leaders, look at their wisdom first … which is the fruit of their knowledge. Unfortunately, I have mistakenly chosen leaders based on talent and knowledge or as a way to “reward” them for a season of dependable service. We cannot promote a person simply because they made our life easier for a season.

Prayer

Father, please help me apply the knowledge you give me to make a difference in how I live and think. Teach me to be a wise leader even though others influence me to knee-jerk. Instead, help me be “knee-wise” … and spend time in prayer to inquire of You in all things.
